An outdoor kitchen gets used in the months when it is hottest, which is exactly when the ice machine in it is under the most stress. Production drops, then the bin stops filling, then it stops making anything. The machine is almost always fine.
Outdoor-rated means sealed, not cold
An outdoor-rated unit is built to tolerate humidity, rain and temperature swing. It is not built to reject heat into still air at 105 degrees, and it cannot, because no refrigeration can. Rejection needs a temperature difference and airflow, and a machine built into a stone surround with two inches of clearance has neither.
That is why the problem is seasonal and repeatable: the unit is fine in April, marginal in June and useless in August, then recovers in October and everybody forgets about it until next year.
What gets looked at, and in what order
- Whether it can breathe at all. Front-breathing units need their grille clear; anything drawing from the sides needs actual gaps.
- Condenser cleaning. Outdoors this means insects and pollen as well as dust, and it wants doing twice a year here.
- Water filter. A restricted fill produces small or hollow cubes long before it produces none.
- Scale in the reservoir and drain line. Houston water plus summer heat is the fastest scaling combination we see.
- The harvest circuit. Mould heater and thermostat, both replaceable and neither expensive.
The one thing worth changing
If the machine is boxed in, get it opened up. A louvre in the surround, a gap behind, a shaded position – anything that lets it breathe will do more for reliability than any part we can fit.
