Quotes on integrated equipment surprise people, and the surprise is nearly always the labor rather than the part. It is worth understanding what that hour at each end is actually buying.
Freestanding versus fitted
A freestanding machine takes ten minutes to expose: forward on its feet, disconnect, work. A panel-ready one is fixed to the underside of a counter that is frequently stone, wearing a cabinet panel made for that kitchen and unmatched anywhere on a shelf, and standing on a floor that may well have been laid around it.
The order it has to happen in
- Panel off without stressing its mounting brackets.
- Counter fixings released rather than levered.
- Floor protected, because the feet will mark it otherwise.
- Machine walked out level, so the drain hose does not empty into the cabinet run.
- Everything back square, which takes as long as it took to come out.
What goes wrong when it is rushed
Stone counters chip at the underside fixing points. Custom panels scuff against the run beside them and there is no matching replacement. Drain hoses loop wrongly on refit and produce a machine that will not empty, which was not the original complaint. None of that is recoverable cheaply, and all of it is avoidable by taking the time.
The part we would rather do first
Establish whether the machine has to come out at all. Filters, spray arms, door seals, latches, controls and many drain pumps are reachable from the front. Only leaks from behind, inlet valves, circulation pumps and heaters genuinely require the unit out.
